Before becoming a full member of the Legion a new recruit (Tiro) must have completed a “basic” kit. The kit must consist of a Tunica, one pair of shoes (Caligae), a belt (Cloth or military), a belt, and dagger. The tunic must be 100% wool, the shoes and belt patterns must be consistent with one of the patterns from the time period that the unit is reenacting, and the dagger must also be from the time period that the unit is reenacting. Below are examples and brief descriptions of what the different items look like.
Tunic (Tunica): In most cases it is 3’ by 3’, fitting most people. Traditionally most tunics were sleeveless. The reason for this is that when you put on a cloth belt the tunic bunches up to for sleeves, but you may attach short sleeves if you would like. The unit currently uses a brownish red colored tunic. We will help new members locate and obtain wool and supply the correct pattern to construct a tunic. Stitching by hand is preferred, but machine stitching, as long as it is done on the inside and out of sight, is allowed.

Shoes (Caligae): These are the standard issued boots of the Roman military. Granted that there were hundreds of different styles and no two were alike, all Caligae followed or were based on one simple pattern. The base of the shoes would be made out of a thicker leather and would have a thinner type of leather to use to make the body of the shoe. Hob nails would then be put on the bottom of the shoes. Many of us make our own shoes and we can supply both pattern and leather, but for those with cash, there are several vendors who we recommend.

Belt (Balteaus): A full military belt is will be required once the recruit becomes a full member. However, the recruit will not be expected to have completed the military belt right after becoming a member, just as long as the person shows that he is making an effort to complete the belt. There are several different patterns that the person can choose from, with style reflecting the individual. The belt consists of a leather blank, with side plates attached, rings to hang the dagger, and a buckle. Also attached to the belt is a front apron with leather strips and studs. The unit will help the person out on where to find the different plates and leathers. Below is an example of a period belt.

Dagger (Pugio): The dagger certainly is a special item of choice, but most opt to purchase a dagger from one of our quality vendors. They are not extremely expensive and can be upgraded as time goes on.
